Fatal hit and run at Montreal Lake Cree Nation, results in jail sentence and three-year driving ban

Gloria Naytowhow said she feels angered and let down by the justice system.

The woman who struck and killed Naytowhow’s brother John Bird in April, 2011 has received a four month jail sentence, to be followed by two years probation and a three-year driving prohibition.

Jody Roberts, 34, was sentenced Thursday at Montreal Lake Cree Nation. A guilty plea was entered on Nov. 3, 2022 to a single charge of failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

“I felt the justice system failed us. It’s like my brother was not worthy. If you were to kill a cow, you would probably get five years,” Naytowhow said.

On April 3, 2011, John Moses Bird, who was also celebrating his 49th birthday, was struck and killed on a grid road at the reserve. Roberts, who is the daughter of former Chief Frank Roberts, was arrested in March of 2021.

Adding to Naytowhow’s frustration is her belief that Roberts’s family knew what happened and tried to cover it up, citing numerous people who told her that.

“They never came forward. They left us with no closure for ten years,” Naytowhow explained.

Every year on the anniversary of Bird’s death as a way to raise awareness about the case, the family participated in a walk.

As part of Thursday’s hearing, Naytowhow was provided an opportunity to read a victim impact statement, and cried throughout.

As for Roberts, she offered no apology to Bird’s family.

“She just sat there and looked straight ahead. She didn’t even look at us,” Naytowhow recalled.

paNOW made several attempts to contact Frank Roberts for comment but received no response by the publishing deadline.
