Candle Lake Camp recognized

P.A. area camp recognized with sustainability award

The Hannin Creek Education and Applied Research Centre has added another award to its trophy case.

Last month. the camp facility which is located at Candle Lake was recognized by the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education and Sustainable Development (RCE) with a 2019 Sustainability Award. RCE Saskatchewan is a group made up educational institutions and municipal with the aim of using education to promote sustainability.

Shannon Anderson, who manages the facility, said the camp was recognized due to their work running the camp sustainably and for providing education in the Boreal Forest. Anderson said winning an award like this is truly beneficial for them, given the camp has only been going in its current form for five years.

“We’re still trying to get the word out there that we exist. Receiving an award like this really puts us on another stage,” she said.

Running and maintaining the Hannin Creek facility is a joint effort involving the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Right now is an exciting time for the facility as they now have the ability to offer users more than they have in the past. This includes both wet and dry laboratory facilities for people looking to do research.

Anderson said currently the busy season for the facility tends to be in the summer from May until August. She added they would like to see the facility be in use all year round.

“The more groups that we have that recognize that we’re here and realize what kind of potential there is, the more we’re going to be able to use this facility and that would be incredible,” she said.

Overall the facility manager said the educational component the camp provides is something that is important going into the future. Right now Anderson is in the process of getting ready to host a youth conservation camp at the facility.

“It’s really hard to conserve something you have no idea about,” she said.
