Adult sentence sought in shooting death

On Friday, a courtroom full of people heard from the Crown prosecutor that an adult sentence will be sought for the teen boy accused in the shooting death of a well-known volunteer in Prince Albert.

Late on Thursday, police confirmed that the body found near a walking path in the Crescent Heights neighbourhood on Sunday was that of Marina Thorpe, 64.

Police also stated a teen boy, who can’t be identified under of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with first-degree murder.

At least 20 family members and friends packed the courtroom in Prince Albert as the youth was escorted into the prisoner’s box.

The teen, who has a slight build and short blond hair, wore an olive green shirt. He sat with his hands in his lap and moved very little when he stood.

In the court’s gallery, people shed tears and consoled each other.

The youth is still in custody and is back in court next Friday.

Thorpe’s best friend had originally planned to address media outside the court, however, the family requested that she not make a comment at this time.

Their grief was visible, as 20 or more people left, many with red eyes, and wiping away tears.

Thorpe’s community involvement is known widely around Prince Albert. She was an active volunteer with multiple groups.

On Facebook, Lori Mathers commented: “Such a devastating tragedy. Marina was an amazing woman and will be sadly missed by so many.”

Joanne L. Guthrie wrote: “So tragic. A beautiful lady. So very sorry for the family. In shock”

The location in which Thorpe’s body was found also came as a surprise to many of paNOW’s social media commenters.

Craig Walker commented: “Used to live a couple hundred feet from that bridge and walked across it everyday when I was a kid … So sad.”
