TRHL teams move on in provincials as league playoffs begin Friday

Feb 4, 2026 | 1:05 PM

Teams from the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL) competing in ‘D’ provincials are moving onto the second round.

The Shellbrook Elks, Hague Royals, and Birch Hills Blackhawks were all victorious in their first-round matchups and are moving on. The Allan Flames are also in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.

Shellbrook made quick work of the Blaine Lake Raiders of the Sask. Prairie Hockey League (SPHL), sweeping their Highway 40 rivals in back-to-back games. The Elks took Game 1 4-2 before laying the hammer down in Game 2 with a 5-1 win to advance to the next round, where they’ll meet the Lucky Lake-Beechy Lakers of the Sask. Valley Hockey League (SVHL).

The Lakers managed a thrilling comeback in their first round series against the Dodsland Stars, after they dropped Game 1 6-3 in Lucky Lake. The series then shifted to Kerrobert for Games 2 and 3, as a fire destroyed Dodsland’s arena, and the Lakers prevailed, winning 4-2 in Game 2 and 5-2 in Game 3.

Lucky Lake has home ice in the second round matchup, meaning Game 1 will be in Shellbrook on Saturday at 7 p.m. Game 2 will be played in Lucky Lake on Feb. 13 and, if necessary, Game 3 is scheduled for Feb. 14 also in Lucky Lake.

The second matchup for the TRHL in provincials will be anything but a tea party as Hague lines up against Birch Hills.

Hague needed three games to move on from their first-round matchup against the Kelvington Wheat Kings of the Wheatland Senior Hockey League (WSHL). The Royals took the long way to the next round after dropping Game 1 at home in overtime, 6-5. Game 2 in Kelvington was a close one too, however the Royals finished on the winning side with a 7-5 triumph. In the deciding Game 3, Hague proved they want the provincial title more as they throttled the Wheat Kings, 6-1 to advance.

Meanwhile, Birch Hills didn’t have much of a fight in their Round 1 series against the Hudson Bay Hunters, also of the WSHL. The Blackhawks steamrolled the Hunters in Game 1 in Birch Hills, 12-2, before laying the beating in a closer contested Game 2 in Hudson Bay, winning 7-4.

Hague and Birch Hills met twice during the TRHL regular season, both ending in one goal games. The Royals took the first meeting 4-3 in regulation back on Nov. 7, before Birch Hills returned the favour just a couple weeks later with a 5-4 win in overtime on Nov. 22.

Game 1 of the TRHL matchup for Friday night in Hague with an 8:30 start, while Game 2 is set for Feb. 13 in Birch Hills also at 8:30. If necessary, Game 3 is scheduled for Feb. 15 in Hague at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, Allan will get their first taste of provincial action on Saturday when they host the Ituna Avalanche in Round 2. The Avalanche have only been around since the 2020 season and have been a member of the Prairie Men’s Hockey League (PMHL) since its inception in 2024. Game 1 is set for 8 p.m. sharp, followed by Game 2 in Ituna at 5 p.m. on Feb. 14, and a possible Game 3 on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
