No boat? No problem: Electric surfboards set to make waves in Saskatchewan lake country

For those who like speed, these boards deliver.

“They can go up to about 60 kilometres per hour for the adrenaline junkie like myself, or you can tone it down to training mode to teach the family as well. So, it’s very versatile.”

Unlike traditional wake surfing, which relies on large boats to generate waves, electric surfboards use powerful battery-driven jet systems. They take about two hours to charge and can run between 45 to 60 minutes at a time, which Zawerucka said is more than enough time for most riders to get their fill.

The boards are being imported from Australia, where they are manufactured. He plans to start with a small fleet of 5 pro models and 1 sport model, testing the waters—literally and figuratively—before expanding.

While the price point may raise eyebrows at first glance, he argues it stacks up differently when compared to traditional surfing with a boat.

“When you think about a boat being $250,000 now, a $10,000 surfboard kind of puts it all in perspective, right? That’s how I look at it.”

And with no fuel required, the long-term cost and environmental footprint can be significantly lower.

Beyond the speed, cost and convenience, there’s also a social and recreational upside.

“You can go out with everybody else out there on the lake, and you can definitely jump the surf boat wakes if you want to… or you can ride on a glass calm day and just rip around as well. You can kind of do it all.”

Despite the high-performance feel, the boards aren’t just for experts.

“You don’t have to be. Some experience would be great, but it’s quite easy to get on and learn in training mode,” he said.

To introduce the technology to the region, Zawerucka is planning a series of demo days across Saskatchewan’s lake country, including stops near Waskesiu Lake, Candle Lake and the Saskatoon area.

“I’ll keep everybody posted on what’s happening for sure through advertisements on paNOW.com.”

It’s a first for Canada and he believes the timing couldn’t be better.

“The first dealer of this board, yes… this is the best in the world… It’s definitely the fastest, the most agile board out there.”

For a region known for its love of lake life, the arrival of electric surfboards could mark the beginning of a new summer tradition in Saskatchewan.
