Mintos split weekend to close out season series with Estevan

Oct 19, 2024 | 5:15 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos managed a weekend split in their season series finale with the Estevan Bears at the Art Hauser Centre.

Entering the weekend at 2-0 against the Bears on the season, Estevan managed to steal a win in game one on Friday.

Down 3-1 entering the second period, Carter Cole lit the lamp for the first time this season to pull the Mintos back to within one. The marker kicked off a back-and-forth bout as Boston Schmidt restored the lead a short time for the Bears, then Connor Howe scored for the Mintos to make it a one goal game and rounding out the frame, Cooper Flath’s second of the night made it 5-3 entering the third.

P.A.’s Kelan Simmonds continued the teeter totting seven seconds into the frame to once again cut the deficit to one. But rather than Esteven restoring their lead yet again, Howe had other plans and potted his second of the game on the powerplay to bring the game to even.

However, it was the Bears who got the last laugh as Roan Burgess scored the dagger with 4:23 remaining to claim victory for Estevan, 6-5.

Brady Carr collected the win in goal for the Bears, making 24 stops while Mintos netminder Josh Henry tallied 32 saves and was credited with the loss.

It was the exact opposite result in game two as the defence was strong on either end in a low scoring affair.

Following a scoreless first, the second period also nearly went scoreless but with one second left on the clock, Gunner Moore scored for the Bears as they held a 1-0 lead heading to the third.

There, Jordon Abrametz scored the equalizer for P.A. just four minutes into the frame.

After regulation solved nothing, a winner was decided in overtime when Howe scored his team leading eighth goal of the season midway through the extra period to win it, 2-1 for the Mintos.

Jayden Blanchette picked up the win in net, turning aside 45 saves while Carr was back in goal for the Bears, making 37 stops in the loss.

Prince Albert continues their homestand on Wednesday when they welcome the Battlefords Stars to the Art Hauser Centre for a 7:00 p.m. start. Then, the Yorkton Maulers will make the trip to Hockeytown North next weekend to wrap up their season series.
