River Riders put up stellar performances in first home games of fall season

Week two of the Kinsmen Football League is in the books and it was a big showing for two Prince Albert teams on home field.

Last Sunday was the home opener for the peewee and bantam River Riders for this year’s fall season.

In a big defensive showing, the bantam team shut out the Steelers 14-0 and head coach Joey Hemsworth couldn’t be happier.

Obviously our defence played unreal, not allowing any points. Pretty much all facets of the game, we played a pretty solid game,” he said.

Unfortunately, the peewee River Riders didn’t have the same fate as they fell 42-24 in a hard-fought game against the Steelers.

Coach Taras Kachkowshi said he was proud of the team regardless.

“We actually scored the first nine points of the game. We kept it pretty close and competitive for most of the game. I think it was an admirable effort and I was very proud of the kids for playing a great game,” he said.

Although the season is only two weeks old, both coaches said their teams are coming together very well.

“The kids haven’t disappointed,” Hemsworth said. “They come to practice every day, they put the work in. Obviously, there’s things to improve but being 2-0 is the way you want to start.”

“I think we’re stronger than we normally are,” Kachkowski said. “We could be in for a very good year.”

Both teams play in Saskatoon on Sunday as the bantam Riders play the Falcons at 12:30 p.m. and the peewee team plays the Titans at 2:15 p.m.
