Sizzling Summer Heat

Ways to beat the summer heat

Jun 28, 2021 | 12:49 PM

Get your sunscreen on because it’s going to be toasty.

Those are words of advice you’ll hear from Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance in Prince Albert.

“I encourage people on these hot days to head over to the library, grab a book to read. Sit where it is cool or go to the mall and window shop or something like that,” said Karasiuk

The high temperatures are prompting warnings across the prairies and have people searching for shade to cool down.

The more vulnerable have access to the existing resources in place including the drop-in centers to be able to get in out of the heat and get some water.

He recommends the public keep an eye out for their neighbours and those exposed to the weather.

“We want to get them to find some shade. If they look like they have been in the sun too long, call 911 and let our emergency services do our part to keep them safe” said Karasiuk

Spray parks around the City of Prince Albert are not only fun for children but functional as they provide a good option for cooling down, regardless of your age.

Donna Hordyski is the marketing coordinator for Gateway Mall and said they are completely air-conditioned. They welcome the whole family to come down to beat the heat.

“Take a break, bring the little ones. Have a little visit in the food court. CJ’s Climb and Play PA is available. Mom can do all kinds of window shopping,” said Hordyski

For now, the mall’s COVID-19 guidelines remain the same.

“We have hand sanitizing stations near every entrance and we ask that you hand sanitize both coming in and going out of the mall. Right now masks are still required for the common area of the mall and each individual store has its own requirement,” she said “ They will ask you to sanitize and ask you to continue to wear your mask. There is directional signage around the mall to keep traffic going. We try to think of everything to make your shopping experience a pleasant one” Hordyski said.

Prince Albert’s hottest day in the forecast this week is Wednesday and Thursday with a high of 37 degrees Celsius— with no rain in sight.

The keys to beating the summer’s heat will be staying hydrated with water, cool down in a cold bath or shower, keep your window blinds closed during the day, wear a brimmed hat outside, remember sunscreen and find shade as much as possible for you and your pets.
