Wildfire near Prince Albert pulp mill contained

A fire burning near the Prince Albert Pulp Mill has been contained.

In an email to paNOW, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency said the blaze was started by a lightning strike around 5 p.m. on Saturday. As of midday Monday it was contained at 5.4 hectares.

The fire did not threaten any structures.

Ground and air crews from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency were assisted by Buckland Fire and Rescue, Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation and Wahpeton Dakota Nation in controlling the blaze.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency urged people to take precautions not to start fires as conditions remain dry across the province.

A separate fire, this one inside the south west corner of Prince Albert National Park has also been contained. That blaze was also caused by a lightning strike.

So far in 2021 there have been 104 wildfires, that’s above the five year average of 87 for this time.
