Blades take first Highway 11 rivalry edition over Raiders

The Blades got on the board first during a 5-on-3 powerplay. On that powerplay, a shot from Brayden Klimpke was stopped, and Kazden Mathies found the rebound to put home at the 12:00 mark.

Before the end of the period, the Raiders on a powerplay of their own tied it. Owen Corkish moved the puck to the back to the blueline for newcomer Jordan Murray. He moved the puck back and forth with Connor Howe until the lane opened up for a Howe onetimer, and the local boy scoed his third of the season at 19:45.

At the end of the period, the crowd was still roaring from Howe’s goal when the buzzer went. Jack Kachkowski of the Blades took a shot well after the buzzer went, and Howe stepped in to drop the gloves at the end of the period.

After 2: Raiders 1 – 1 Blades, shots 10-8 Blades, 23-16 Raiders overall

Early in the third period, the Raiders were still feeling the momentum from Howe’s fight. At the 2:02 mark, Maddix McCagherty sent the puck up the right wall to centre for Kyle Obobaifo, and as he crossed the blueline he sent the puck towards the goal. The Blades goaltender came out to play it, but Ben Harvey streaking in got their first and hit the empty net for his third of the year.

From there though, the Blades took over the rest of the game. At 13:59, Jack Kachkowski managed to get the puck in the corner and sent it to the front of the goal, but he got some puck luck and it bounced off a defender’s skate and into the back of the net.

Finally, on a pretty soft slashing call, the Blades got another powerplay near the end of the game. At the 18:32 mark, a screen set up in front left a shooting lane for David Lewandowski to shoot, and he picked the top corner to give the Blades the lead.

FINAL: Raiders 2 – 3 Blades, shots 16-7 Blades, 32-28 Blades overall

The Raiders and Blades will battle it out for the second straight night in Saskatoon on Saturday night.
