Non-profit manager looking to become P.A.’s Ward 8 councillor

Another person has put their name forward for Prince Albert’s by-election.

Peter Friedrichsen is looking to fill the Ward 8 seat which was left vacant after Ted Zurakowski resigned earlier this year.

Friedrichsen has lived in the P.A. and the West Hill area since 2020, and is currently the general manager of the Prince Albert Model Forest Association— which does forest research and education in the region.

He told paNOW he thinks his short time here can be very helpful for the city’s council.

“Most people have left Prince Albert to go to larger cities like Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon— where I’m coming the other way and I think I can bring a lot of value.”

Friedrichsen added his partner is a born and raised resident who’s helped him keep up to date with the city’s history as well as part and ongoing issues.

This includes keeping young people in the city. He thinks having someone who chose to move to the city at a young age could encourage others to do the same.

“I came from a larger city because I see a really high quality of life here and the potential opportunities for young people,” he added.

Other issues he’s already discussed with residents are having more skilled workers, specifically those in the trades, living in the city and ensuring people are safe when they leave their homes.

Friedrichsen also believes his career background could help the city when it comes to climate change.

“Any decisions that we make today will need to take into account the changes we’re going to be confronting in the future and as someone who’s been working in this field I can be a great asset to decision-making at the city level.”

Meanwhile, four more people have also put their names forward for the by-election.

This includes Doug Erickson, Dennis Nowoselsky, Darren Solomon, and Pamela Sukut.

The election will happen on May 31st with polling happening at Arthur Pechey School from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. A one-hour polling station will be set up at Victoria Hospital and mobile poll applications will also be taken until May 17th.
