Another Prince Albert resident believes he has what it takes to be the new councillor for Ward 8.

Darren Solomon, the principal at Little Red River School, announced his intentions to run in the by-election to replace Ted Zurakowski.

“Ted did an excellent job,” said Solomon. “He ran through six terms and 18 years of public service and he has a tremendous record.”

Solomon, a long-time resident and volunteer, has spent many years with the Prince Albert Kinsmen working on fundraising for local projects and developments, and Telemiracle.

In an interview with paNOW, Solomon was asked why he wants to run in the by-election. He said he wants to continue the great work already done by Zurakowski.

“He was authentic, he was genuine, he listened to the residents of Ward 8 and those are the traits that I feel I could bring and carry forward,” Solomon said.

When it came to the issues and challenges, he looks to address, one was helping the city deal with inflationary costs and what it could mean for important infrastructure projects.

He is in support of the Yard District and the future aquatic centre and arenas.

“The Yard is progressing nicely and that’s fantastic to see all that kind of development in P.A.,” Solomon said. “The revenue generated by those is going to be good for the City of P.A. and I think that will help offset the cost of the two new rinks and aquatic centre.”

Another issue he knows he will face is managing the city’s growth, especially with major projects like the restart of the Pulp Mill and the OSB plant by One Sky Forest Products potentially bringing many newcomers to the city.

“We also have to make sure we have the services to meet the needs of all these new folks that are coming to town,” he said.

He also touched on future development like the new FNUniv campus, new apartment buildings near the Victoria Hospital and future projects in the works from the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan.

“I think just managing the growth is going to be a challenge in itself,” he said.

Solomon, who has lived in many neighbourhoods in the city, knows that crime continues to be a major issue for residents.

“It’s a complicated issue connected to addictions, homelessness, poverty and my belief is that a solution lays in all levels of government coming together and finding ways to improve the current reality and I’m keen to being a part of those discussions.”

Now that he has announced his intentions to run, he will spend time going door to door and possibly hosting different events to meet with residents in the Ward and hear what they have to say,.

“I think it’s just getting out and talking to folks and meeting them at their doorsteps or being available to them at different events I’m thinking of hosting.”

The by-election for Ward 8 has been scheduled for May 31 with nominations closing on April 26.
