Nowoselsky seeks return to City Council

A man who sat on Prince Albert city council for four terms, before challenging for the mayor’s chair in 2020, is tossing his hat back in the ring.

Dennis Nowoselsky is now one of three confirmed candidates for the upcoming Ward 8 by-election.

“I think I’d bring the experience, the education, the energy and the dedication to public service to do a good job,” he told paNOW on Friday.

During his mayoral campaign in 2020, Nowoselsky promoted increased transparency at city hall and better financial management, along with greater investment in water and sewer infrastructure.

Three years later, noting the city’s planned rink and aquatic projects on the southeast side, Nowoselsky said he would have supported a water palace on the Alfred Jenkins area property or at the Arts Centre. He however does not support buying extra land, that in his words, was inflated, and going massively into debt.

“I would like to find out the total debt and the interest on the debt,” he said.

Prior to running for Mayor, Nowoselsky represented Ward 7 – the seat currently held by Dawn Kilmer. Citing the city’s senior population, as well as the high number of low and middle-income earners, Nowoselsky said he believes in thrifty stewardship and responsible management. He explained taxpayers cannot afford any more massive tax increases or add-on taxes.

“People are fed up. There’s people in West Hill paying $6,000 and more in taxes,” he said.

Nowoselsky is also committed to beautifying the city and looking for additional ways to save costs.

Candidates have until April 26 to submit their applications, and then have a further 24 hours to change their minds.

The other confirmed candidates are Doug Erickson and Pam Sukut.

Darren Solomon has also publicly announced his intentions to run, but his name was not included in Friday’s candidates’ update from City Hall.

The by-election for Ward 8 has been scheduled for May 31.
