There is now one less name on the province’s most wanted list.

Cody Wiegers-McDougald, 31, appeared by phone from the Melfort RCMP detachment when his matters were discussed Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

According to the post by Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers, Wiegers-McDougald was wanted for being unlawfully at large. However, more details were revealed in court, when his charges were read aloud. They date back to Dec. 30, 2021, when he is alleged to have been behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle.

Charges this year from March 25th and June 1st, relate to failures to comply with court orders. On June 2nd, he was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police. Another charge from May 5th relates to the same type of offence, as well as one from June 30th in the RM of Prince Albert that also involved a stolen vehicle. When asked if he understood the charges, Wiegers-McDougald replied “sure yeah.”

The outcome of Friday’s hearing was that Wiegers-McDougald was denied release and his matters were adjourned to July 21st, to provide time for him to speak to his lawyer.

Wiegers-McDougald is no stranger to the courts, and in December 2018, received a four-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to several charges related to assault and drug possession.

Carl Swenson, who represented Wiegers-McDougald, said his client hoped to get treatment and counselling while in jail.

“He fell in with the wrong crowd, and he wants to essentially distance himself from any negative peer association,” Swenson said outside court. “He wanted to go to jail. He wanted to distance himself from the street. He knows the federal system has very good programming.”

Wiegers.McDougald also has a conviction from 2017 related to dangerous driving.
