Was P.A. the coldest place on earth this morning?

Residents of Prince Albert woke up to a bitterly cold morning on Thursday but was it one of the coldest on earth?

Some independent weather websites reportedly showed Prince Albert was in the top three of the coldest places in the world, matching temperatures of -38 C and -40 C with Anadyr and Jakutsk, Russia.

While Environment Canada doesn’t keep track of international weather spots, Meteorologist Terri Lang pointed out, another weather station in Canada was colder.

“I did notice Eureka (Nunavut) was -41.3 C. That would have been a colder spot. P.A. got down to -40.5 C.”

She noted despite the freezing temperatures, the record low for January 20 was set nearly 80 years ago when the mercury dropped to -50 C without windchill in 1943.

Thankfully, Lang said there is a bit of a reprieve from the cold, but we’ll still experience winter conditions.

“There’s a weather system coming through over the next day or so and that’s going to bring some snow with it, doesn’t look like too much. Some wind with it and certainly, some tricky driving conditions in the Prince Albert area.”

“We will get a bit of an arctic push in behind that and then we’ll be sort of sitting around seasonal averages.”

Those seasonal averages for Prince Albert are highs of around -13 C and lows of -25 C.

Regarding snow, Lang said that’s expected to come over the weekend which is good news for area farmers.

“Most of the snow through the season so far has fallen through that central part of the province. After how dry it’s been and plus it will help set up for wildfire season as well if there is a good snowpack.”
