P.A. MP joins U.S. Congressman on calls to reopen border to fully vaxxed Canadians

Prince Albert’s MP is joining a U.S. Congressman in an attempt to reopen the border for Canadians.

Randy Hoback and Brian Higgins, representative for areas such as Buffalo and Niagara Falls, issued a joint statement on Thursday where they called on the Biden Administration to allow fully vaccinated Canadians the option to drive to the U.S.

The two spoke over the phone on Wednesday about the border.

Hoback serves on the House of Commons Special Committee on the Economic Relationship Between Canada and the United States, while Higgins serves as Co-Chair of the Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Group.

For the past several weeks, Americans who’ve received both shots have been allowed to drive across the border, however, Canadians can only travel south if they fly.

“When the pandemic hit in early 2020, Americans and Canadians understood temporary restrictions were necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19 until a vaccine could be developed,” the statement read.

“Families on both sides of the border sacrificed time and separation from their loved ones in the interest of public health.”

Hoback and Higgins believe businesses, families and communities on both sides of the border have been separated for too long and deserve a policy that allows them to come together again.

“Canada recognized the powerful protection the vaccines offer and opened their border to all fully vaccinated Americans in August. The United States must follow the science and do the same. The Biden Administration should immediately reopen the land border to fully vaccinated Canadians.”

The current U.S. restriction is set to expire on October 21.
