Impaired driving charges in Sask. teen girl’s death

RCMP confirmed a 17-year-old boy is facing a number of charges including impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death after a 15 -year-old girl was killed last July in the Village of Debden.

In the early morning hours of July 7, Kaylan Keenatch was walking on a road in the community near the arena when she was struck by a vehicle. She was rushed to hospital with severe, life threatening injuries and died the following day while in care.

A court date for the accused has not been set. The teen cannot be named due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

According to numerous Facebook posts, Keenatch was well loved. Over $2,500 has been raised through a GoFundMe charity to assist Keenatch’s family with funeral expenses and other costs.

“She was a free spirited and very loving girl. She loved dancing, spending time with family and loved ones. Kaylan touched everyone’s heart in someway,” a statement on the page said. It also indicated Keenatch was an organ donor.

“They have found successful donors for Kaylan. She has saved lives and is helping other families who are going through a tough time as well,” the statement said.
