Cooking Safety

While people settle into self-isolation PAFD offers cooking safety tips

With more kids at home because of a cancelled school year and parent working from home, the Prince Albert Fire Department (PAFD) is reminding residents who may be partaking in more culinary activities to do so safely.

“One of the big things that we’ve always promoted is that you never leave cooking unattended. If you’ve got the stove on, we’d like to see you staying in the kitchen, so you don’t get distracted,” Deputy Fire Chief, Alex Paul told paNOW. “It’s very easy to put something on the stove and think that you’re just going to watch t.v. for five minutes and half an hour goes by and your food gets burnt.”

Paul noted kid’s safety is very important in the kitchen.

He recommended keeping handles turned inwards. Avoid deep-frying or cooking with oils and don’t leave kids unattended in the kitchen.

If kids are making food on their own, Paul advised parents to encourage kids to prepare food that doesn’t require the use of a stovetop or oven.

General fire kitchen safety tips from the department include keeping your stove and burners clean. Set timers for your food. Keep flammables away from stovetops. In the event of a small grease fire, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the burner, never pour water on a grease fire.

If a fire does break out and it’s possible, extinguish it with a fire extinguisher, but if the fire is too big or you can’t handle it, get out of the house and call the fire department.

“That’s our number one thing. To make sure people are safe. So, we want them getting out of the house and calling us as quickly as possible,” Paul said.

Paul said to date, the PAFD has not seen an increase in the number of cooking-related calls but added we are in the early stages of people self-isolating at home.
