Raiders can’t take advantage of chances to get 2 points in Regina

Nov 16, 2019 | 10:57 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders got one point out of the Regina against the Pats, but had so many opportunities to get the full-two that they let go by the wayside.

The Raiders had eight power play attempts but just scored once. The Pats had two goals disallowed after pucks went off their gloves, but even that wasn’t enough for the Raiders to take advantage as they fell 4-3 in a shootout.

For the Raiders, their record falls to 13-4-3-1 on the season. They also have one win in their last four games (1-2-1). The Pats improve their record to 3-12-2 on the year.

“We come out and early on, we were fighting it. We just weren’t making plays,” Raiders assistant coach Jeff Truitt said. “We were turning pucks over and I thought we didn’t defend our net very well. Our first two goals [against] were evident of that.

“We get a rebound shot and they have a guy outside the dots that we just can’t find, he puts it in the net. We get a tip in front where we didn’t box out. We have to be harder in those areas.”

The Raiders scored the opening goal halfway through the first period, with Kaiden Guhle scoring the lone Raiders’ goal on the man-advantage.

The Pats went on to score three straight goals. Ty Kolle scored on that rebound from outside the circle, and Carter Chorney scored his first goal as a Pat after a trade from the Swift Current Broncos. Logan Nijhoff kicked off the second period after the Raiders couldn’t advance the puck in their own zone.

They were able to tie it up with goals from Reece Vitelli, who scored his second in Raiders’ colours this year, and Aliaksei Protas got his 14th goal of the year in the third period.

Kolle scored in the lone goal in a three-round shootout.

Pats goaltender Max Paddock made 33 saves on 36 shots, including all three in the shootout. Boston Bilous made 24 saves on 27 shots in goal for the Raiders.

Pearce leaves the game

Raiders forward Eric Pearce took a high hit from Ty Kolle early in the second period. He did not return to the game. Truitt said he talked to Pearce during the second intermission and said he appeared to be fine, but didn’t see him immediately after the game.

Hitmen

The Raiders will head back up to the Art Hauser Centre on Sunday to take on the Calgary Hitmen. The start for that game will start at 6 p.m.

The last time the Raiders faced the Hitmen, they lost 4-2 after turning the puck over too many times. Truitt hopes to see the end of that on Sunday.

“When we turn pucks over 20 plus times, we’re giving teams opportunities to come at us 20 or more times… We’re taking chances from us in their zone and giving it to them,” Truitt said. “Against Calgary, it’s the exact same thing. We have to make them come 200 feet instead of giving them easy plays.”
