SPCA plans a number of fundraising events

May 1, 2019 | 1:00 PM

With warm weather on the horizon, the Prince Albert SPCA will soon be hosting a number of events all with the goal of raising money for continued care of animals in need.

The first event to take place will be the SPCA’s annual garage sale at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. Residents are encouraged to donate items for the sale, and to stop by the sale to see what items are available.

Warm weather typically brings along with it higher numbers of animals arriving at the shelter, according to SPCA Operations Manager Kathleen Howell, who told paNOW about the upcoming events.

“We’re looking for donations for pretty much anything besides clothing, or anything that is in bad shape for the garage sale,” Howell said.

“We’re taking donations between May 6 to 8, and they can be dropped off right at the Exhibition Centre. You can also have someone come pick up the items, people can call Connie at 306-961-4572.”

The garage sale will run May 9, 10 and 11.

Howell added that with the numerous amount of events planned for the coming months, the SPCA is now currently looking for volunteers to assist with operations and with the events themselves.

“We’re looking for not only people to attend and have a great time at our events, but we’re also looking for volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering with us you can come to the shelter or email us at adoptions@princeablbertspca.ca and Jocelyn Bovay will be the person they will be in contact with,” Howell said.

“May 11 will be our next event. We will be taking some animals to an Outlaws lacrosse game, and doing a little walk down centre stage and give community members a nice chance to meet some of the animals we have looking for homes.”

The next event taking place will be a Day in the Park, being held on June 1.

“It will also be with the Outlaws lacrosse team, and we’re hosting that one in Kinsmen Park,” Howell said. “We’ll have a barbecue, activities for kids, a bunch of our animals out there and some of our shirts and hats available for purchase to support the SPCA. That evening people can also attend an Outlaws lacrosse tournament being held at the same spot.”

As well, a local Prince Albert food truck, Baby Got Bannock, will be hosting a number of events in coordination with the SPCA over the summer.

“May 31, June 13, July 11, Aug. 16 and Sept. 5 for lunch hours Baby Got Bannock will be here and they donate a portion of their earnings right back to us,” Howell said.

“People can come down and support a local food truck and the SPCA all at the same time.”

Duke’s Pet Shop within the Prince Albert SPCA will also soon be hosting a grand re-opening on Saturday, May 25.

“We will have a bunch of really cool products for sale for your pets,” Howell said. “As well our T-shirts and hats will be available, and we will have 50 per cent off on any item that has been here for a long period of time.”

The last event planned for the summer months will be the ‘Dog Days of Summer’, which will be held one day per month in June, July, August and September.

“It will be an event where people can bring their dogs down to the SPCA and we will have a barbecue and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. So people can come sit and have a beer and a burger in the sun while your dog plays with other dogs in a safe location,” Howell said.

“We’re thinking it will be on a Thursday evening once a month, but that one does not have a confirmed date yet so people will have to stay tuned.”

Howell added that at the current moment the SPCA has 17 dogs and 42 cats, which she noted is below the average for the beginning of summer months.

“It’s been a slow start to the warmer weather so we’re guessing that we will probably see more animals coming soon,” Howell noted.

“Usually we have about 15 litters of kittens around this point of the year.”
