P.A.’s lone NDP MLA looking forward to busy year ahead

In 2016 the Prince Albert Northcote riding returned to the NDP after a session under the SaskParty.

NDP Nicole Rancourt defeated SaskParty incumbent Victoria Jurgens in the April provincial election, which she said was a “great moment.”

The social worker-turned-provincial politician said she’s settled into her office after spending the first part of her tenure learned about the legislative progress and is now helping constituents with case work.

“One of the things I am happy to be able to do is help people navigate through some of the provincial systems. If they’re having any issues we can help them through that. There has been a lot of different cases where people are getting support that they weren’t before,” Rancourt said.

Rancourt also serves as the critic for Social Services, Community-Based Organizations, Forestry, Municipal Relations and the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program.

She said she expects next year will be busy with a tough budget coming out in March.

“We’ll expect cuts and job layoffs and possibly tax increases, so I will really be focusing on how that will impact people of Prince Albert and my critic areas,” she said.

How the province supports polices services is also her focus. She said the SaskParty needs to help municipal governments pay for policing, especially in P.A. where crime rates are high.

Issues surrounding a provincially-funded second bridge for P.A. is on her agenda for 2017.

As a whole, Rancourt said NDP across the province will fight Bill 40, the Interpretation Amendment Act, which would make it easier for the Wall government to privatize Crown corporations.
