ELECTION 2016: NDP reclaims P.A. Northcote

Apr 4, 2016 | 11:22 PM

After four years the Prince Albert Northcote riding is once again painted orange, as NDP candidate Nicole Rancourt won the riding over incumbent SaskParty candidate Victoria Jurgens.

“It’s been really positive,” Rancourt said. “It was really good to hear the residents’ issues. I’ve been working hard ever since getting nominated and getting to most of the doors in Northcote twice.”

She said she was first compelled to throw her hat into the political ring because she felt Prince Albert needed a strong voice in Regina. “Being a social worker I enjoy advocating for people.”

Rancourt won with 2,691 votes. Jurgens followed closely behind with 2,462 votes.

After a fiercely fought campaign the NDP is still the official opposition against the SaskParty. Rancourt said joining the opposition will be a challenge, but a worthwhile one. “We’ll be a strong opposition, and sometimes a strong opposition can really lead the government in the right direction.”

Jurgens said she will work over the next few days to clean out her office, and then decide what’s next for her. “When one door closes another one opens.

“I want to thank all the people that worked so hard, and even though we didn’t make it I want to congratulate Nicole Rancourt on her win.”
