5 dead, including 3 children, in murder-suicide

Apr 22, 2015 | 9:52 AM

A Tisdale mother and her three children are dead and the man believed to have killed them was himself found dead in Prince Albert, according to the RCMP.

Police found the man with a six-month old infant in a Prince Albert home early Wednesday morning. The infant was not harmed. Police do not consider the man’s death to be a homicide. RCMP say he was known to the victims.

The infant is now in the care of family.

The children, all under the age of nine, and their mother were found at a residence in Tisdale at 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The RCMP had received a complaint on Tuesday evening that they had not been heard from all day and could not be reached. According to the caller, it was not typical behaviour, which led to an RCMP investigation.

An initial investigation has determined that their deaths are homicides. RCMP have not confirmed their identities, but they believe the victims found in the home are the same people who were reported missing. RCMP also believe their deaths occurred before the missing persons report was filed.

The RCMP began a search for a man suspected of the killings. He was found in a Prince Albert home at 2 a.m. on Wednesday. At 6:20 a.m., police entered the home and found the man dead.

The RCMP do not expect to lay any criminal charges in relation to the four deaths in Tisdale, and add there is no risk to public safety.

RCMP will not be releasing further information about the deceased until their identities have been confirmed and their next of kin have been notified and have granted permission to release their names.

Tisdale RCMP is investigating with assistance from the RCMP Major Crime Unit South, RCMP Major Crime Unit North, Prince Albert RCMP General Investigation Section, Tisdale RCMP Forensic Identification Unit and the Prince Albert Police Service.

Police are currently at the scene at the Wicks Mobile Home Park.  The manager of the trailer court, which he identified as Tisdale Mobile Home Park, said the police have been at the scene since Tuesday night.

His wife said via telephone that the family moved in at least eight months ago. She described them as “a very nice young family,” and added she doesn’t know why this happened.

The children went to a local school within the North East School Division. Director of education Don Rempel did not comment about the children specifically, but said the school division was informed about their deaths this morning. The tragic events response team went to Tisdale Elementary School and were there throughout the entire morning and they continue to be there throughout the day, he said via telephone.

He said they are supporting the teachers and have counsellors at the school.

“We kind of huddle to support that school community at this time. We start with the teachers. We are communicating with the parents of the classmates throughout today and letting them know about this event and be prepared to speak with their children this evening. And then we’ll have ongoing counselling support at the school throughout the week and as needed going forward.”

He said they’ve never had to deal with anything like this before.

“This is just tragic and I think we’re all in shock. We do have times when we have the death of a student but nothing as significant as this and [is] certainly going to be a tough few days and months for our community.”
