A recent fundraising campaign proved Prince Albert residents have a big appetite for supporting local causes.

The annual Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign raised nearly $37,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert.

The campaign ran from April 27 to May 3, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert local development co-ordinator Natasha Thomson said she was amazed by the result.

“You know we hoped to raise $20,000 so we were just really astonished that the outcome was this big,” she said. “We’re so thankful to the community for buying cookies because I think everyone ate cookies that week.”

The funds raised will directly support mentoring programs in Prince Albert, including volunteer recruitment and training and matching children with caring mentors.

“And we’re also expanding our programming with schools, and so that helps us to set that up,” Thomson said.

Cheryl Sander, owner of the Tim Hortons locations at Marquis Road and Cornerstone, was equally amazed at how well the community came together for Smile Cookie Week.

“Everybody gets excited and they are bringing cookies to work, and they are bringing cookies to the hospital, and they are probably the most delicious cookies all year long,” she said.

Noting the numerous community members who helped decorate the cookies, including the mayor and the chief of police, Sander said the locally owned business loves helping local causes.

“So why not just put a smile on people’s faces and support our community,” she said.

Last December’s holiday cookie campaign also helped support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert and raised over $10,000 which means with seven months, the total is nearly $50,000.

Next month, the organization is hoping to raise more funds through the Diva for a Day golf event at Kachur’s Golf Course. As of Thursday, there was still room for teams to register.
