National Archery Championships underway in Prince Albert

Aug 2, 2019 | 11:52 AM

The scene has been set in Prince Albert as the 2019 Canadian National Archery Championships get underway just outside of the city. Competitors were getting their eye in and getting into their stride Friday.

The event, which will feature more than 200 competitors across numerous competitions, will run until Aug 11. According to Prince Albert based Timberland Bowbenders President John Cannon, the event has been four years in the making.

“Today we are doing registration for all the athletes. So, everyone is coming in to register for the 3D event that takes place from today until August 5,” Cannon said.

“We started discussing trying to host this event when we were in Ontario in 2015 for nationals. It’s very relieving that we are starting. It’s going to be great and we’re just ready to go.”

Cannon added that registration began in April, and there are currently 220 archers registered to compete. He also noted what a competition like this can do for the local economy.

“A lot of the competitors will be staying in hotels. They will be going to local restaurants and local establishments. The spinoff is tremendous to have this many people here, it’s a great boost,” Cannon said.

“Some of these archers will take all three events we have going on, so they will be in town for 10 or 11 days.”

The actual competitive archery begins Saturday, and runs until August 5. The venue will then transition to the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation grounds on Aug. 6 and 7 and will move to Red Wing School grounds from Aug. 8 to 11. Further details can be found here.
