Fish kill likely caused by heat wave
A number of dead fish found in the water and along the shores of multiple lakes and rivers in Saskatchewan are likely the result of high temperatures lowering oxygen levels in the water, according to a provincial fisheries ecologist.
Hayden Yip, a senior fisheries ecologist with the Ministry of Environment, said the province has received reports of dead fish from several locations, including Tobin Lake, the North Saskatchewan River and lakes throughout the province.
“We have been seeing a number of reports from a number of locations in the province, including Tobin and the North Saskatchewan River in that area, as well as a number of lakes throughout the province where we’ve been seeing these dead fish,” Yip said.
The extremely hot weather in late July and early August reduced the amount of oxygen water is able to hold, which can be fatal for fish when oxygen levels fall too low.
