Easter Egg Hunt blends culture and fun

Apr 4, 2015 | 8:44 AM

Gateway Mall will be hopping with excitement on Saturday as La Societe canadienne-francaise de Prince Albert (the French Canadian Society of Prince Albert) holds its first annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The Easter celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will not only include the hunt, but a colouring contest and crafts.

The society’s assistant director, Dawn Krohn, said they enjoy serving the community and working with families and Easter is the perfect opportunity to do something for the Prince Albert community.

But it’s also about raising cultural awareness.

“We would also like to show people that there is a large Francophone community in the city,” Krohn said.

“And that, although we are an almost invisible minority because most of us are almost fully bilingual and function equally well in English as in French, because French is our mother tongue, it is very, very enjoyable, very fun for us to get together and just have fun activities in French.”

The society, she said, recognizes that Prince Albert is a multicultural city and they are an important part of that.

They chose to hold an Easter Egg Hunt because Easter is a time families commonly gather. She said the event is a way to reach out to the whole family, even though the activity is geared towards children.

Krohn said the mall has allowed them to use an empty location.Tthe eggs will be hidden amongst bales of hay and other Easter decorations.

Parents will need to register their children at a table set up at the front of the location, and the cost to participate is $2 per child. There is no age limit for to participate.

People will be assigned a number and they will be able to find eggs that have that particular number on them. After finding the eggs they will receive a small Easter basket as a prize.

But what Krohn thinks is exciting about this event is that it will run alongside the mall’s traditional Easter bunny activities.

“I think that this is just a great partnership. It makes what they do even bigger, but it’s something that’s very popular in Prince Albert, the Easter bunny at the mall and this will kind of complete their activity, or mesh very well with it.”

The society is already looking to hold another hunt next year.
