River Riders Start Their New Year

Apr 5, 2015 | 8:33 AM

A new year of Prince Albert Minor Football is already under way! Two programs have already started- our indoor flag football program for 8 to 10 year olds and our Senior Six-A-Side program for high school ages. Other programs will be starting at the end of April.

TrainHard is a FREE, 3 hour clinic intended for participants that are new to the sport of football, 9 to 14 years of age. It introduces many of the skills required to play tackle football, but in a non-contact environment. This year’s TrainHard clinic will take place at the Alfred Jenkins Field House on Sunday, April 26th, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Though TrainHard is a free program, we ask that participants pre-register online at www.pariverriders.com, to allow our coaches to plan for the resulting size of group.

Our spring six-a-side football program is an excellent introduction to tackle football. Six-a-side football is an exciting version of the game, where everyone is eligible to carry the football except the offensive centre. Participants will learn at least one position on both sides of the ball, offense and defense. Smaller roster sizes, about 20 maximum per team, allows for more 1-on-1 coaching time, resulting in faster, better player development.

As always with all of Prince Albert Minor Football’s tackle programs, all of the equipment is provided except cleats and water bottles! We have two levels available. Pee Wee is for ages 10 to 12, and Bantam is for ages 13 & 14. Online pre-registration is recommended and available at www.pariverriders.com.

The registration fee and equipment deposit are due at our equipment fitting and dispersal, which will be at Crescent Heights Arena on Sunday, April 26th, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The registration fee is $100.00 and the equipment deposit is $250.00, payable either by cash or post-dated cheque. The deposit is returned when the equipment is handed in at the end of the season.

Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays, and games are on Thurdays from April 27th to June 18th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 each evening on the field between Crescent Heights Arena and John Diefenbaker School. We will also be hosting a jamboree.

New for this spring, P. A. Minor Football will have an outdoor flag football program for ages 8 to 10 on Wednesdays in May and June at Crescent Heights Arena Field. It will be very similar to our indoor flag program, just moved outdoors where football should be played! The registration fee is just $30.00. Football or soccer-style cleats are recommended for better traction on the grass.

New for the fall season, Prince Albert Minor Football will be hosting a Pass, Punt & Kick Competition. It is FREE to enter, and participants could win tickets to the final Roughrider home game of the 2015 season! For over 40 years, the Pass, Punt & Kick competition, sponsored by Football Saskatchewan, SaskTel, and the Sakatchewan Roughriders, has promoted basic football skills through schools and community clubs throughout the province.

It is an optional activity for elementary schools. The PAMF PPK Competition is intended for children who wish to compete, but attend schools that have opted not to hold their own competition. Our competition will take place on Saturday, October 3rd, from 1 pm to 5 pm at Crescent Heights Arena Field. There are three age categories: 14 & Under, 12 & Under, and 10 and under. Boys and girls compete in separate divisions. Winners from this competition move on to the regional final, which will be held on October 10th, also at Crescent Heights Arena.

Winners of the regional competition earn the right to compete in the provincial final in Saskatoon on October 17th, A total of eighteen provincial winners, 9 boys and 9 girls, get invited to Regina, expenses paid, to be presented with plaques during the pre-game show of the Saturday, October 24th Roughrider game! The organizers ask to please pre-register participants, so that they can plan for the resulting size of group.

Also in the fall, we are preparing for another exciting season of Prince Albert River Riders 12 player football. We have a Pee Wee team for ages 10 to 12, and a Bantam team for Age 13 & 14. All the necessary equipment is provided except cleats and water bottles! The River Riders are members of the Saskatoon Kinsmen Football League, consisiting of seven teams in Saskatoon, one in Martensville, and our team in Prince Albert. Practices will start in late August, with our regular season concluding the week of Thanksgiving in October.

Playoffs begin the following week, with all league teams guaranteed at least one game. We play a total of eight games in the season, four at home in Prime Ministers’ park, usually on Sunday afternoons, and four “away” games, generally in Saskatoon, usually on Wednesday evenings.

Practices are on Tuesday and Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings. The registration fee is $175.00 with an equipment deposit of $250.00 also required. Last year, we had 63 players on our Pee Wee team. This year, if we have a minimum of 60 players pre-registered by August 1st, we will be applying to the league to have two Prince Albert based Pee Wee teams.

Both boys and girls are welcome to participate in all Prince Albert Minor Football programs. Online pre-registration is recommended and available at www.pariverriders.com
