Dodging paintballs key at Easter egg hunt

A fun twist on the traditional Easter egg hunt had paintballers slipping, sliding, and dodging puddles as much as paintballs on Good Friday.

“There were a few people that slipped and fell, got pretty wet but they just kept on going,” said Paintball Paradise owner George Lewko.

Paintball Paradise has been hosting an Easter weekend egg hunt for the past four or so years. This time around about 18 people came out from as far as Regina, Saskatoon, and Middle Lake.

The extra challenge of finding Easter eggs on the battlefield may net small prizes in the form of stickers and Easter candy, but that doesn’t deter people from risking some paint splatters to snag the plastic eggs.

“It’s a little fun. Whether we had the Easter eggs or not they’d probably still come but it makes the game a little different because the staff usually puts the Easter eggs out where it’s exposed. So if you’re gonna go get an Easter egg you’re probably gonna get shot,” Lewko said.

Tactically, people have some quick thinking to do in the heat of the moment.

“Ok, well if you’re gonna die anyway, we might as well go get an egg,” he said with a laugh.

The hunts have gained popularity, with a Thursday wind up party for a hockey team making a request for an Easter egg hunt.

But the spring event has been increasingly limited by wet fields.

One field is about 30 per cent flooded, and Lewko says his staff underestimated whether it was usable or not for spring.

“They told me there was a bit of water – a bit of water is more like four feet deep,” he said with a laugh.

The spring trend of damp fields has been going on for about three years.

“We had probably the most water ever sitting around when it froze up. This year there was less snow but there seems to be a bit of water so far,” Lewko said.

The staff’s response to the flooding has involved pumping out water and building up dykes to save their fields.

“It wasn’t easy but it was necessary,” he said.
