New van giving Hope’s Home kids more freedom

Jun 4, 2015 | 5:13 PM

A set of wheels is making the lives of children at Hope’s Home in Prince Albert a little bit more exciting.

On Thursday the daycare centre for children with complex medical needs, as well as other children in the community, unveiled a new accessible van.

Hope’s Home received the funding for the vehicle from the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation and Malcolm Jenkins Foundation/Canadian Tire Prince Albert.

“It’s a huge opportunity for our centre with this van.  With our supportive living 24-hour care opening, we’re able to take our children who have special needs who are in a wheelchair to their appointments,” said regional operations manager of Hope’s Home Jena Baldrey.

“We are able to make sure that our children all get the same opportunity to experience the community, experience all the activities that are out there.”

Overall, she said it gives them hope for the children to be able to go out together as a group.

With the sun shining and the children of Hope’s Home looking on, Malcolm Jenkins spoke about the positive work of Hope’s Home and thanked people for shopping at Canadian Tire, so that he could give back in this way.

“This is something that Prince Albert is lucky to have. A lot of cities don’t have this,” he said.

The new accessible van has eight seats and three wheelchair spots.

“Having the bus gives them (the children) another degree of freedom,” he said, adding it’s great to see the kids so happy.

“They can’t … take them to Waskesiu if they didn’t have this,” he said.  “Now six or eight or 10 of the kids can go out there and have a party just like everyone else can.”
