Families celebrate grandparents day in style at Mont. St. Joseph

To celebrate Grandparent’s Day, Mont. St. Joseph Home rolled out their 12th annual Stroll-A-Thon.

The event, held at their facility on 28th St., saw family members visit the residents, enjoy some good old-fashioned polka music, and take their grandparents for a stroll around the grounds.

“They’re enjoying the landscaping, the weather, the flowers, the beauty of the outdoors in September. What’s more perfect than that?” Executive Director Brian Martin asked in an interview.

Many participants dressed up, danced, and horsed around, hoping to win either the ‘best dressed group’ or ‘created the most excitement’ award.

The event attracts between 350-400 people each year.

“Normally this place is so packed we can’t take anyone else,” Martin explained. “But no matter who comes we’re going to make sure they’re welcome and have a great time.”

Funds raised from the Stroll-A-Thon will go towards replacing the furniture and equipment in Mont. St. Joseph’s common areas. Martin admitted the current furnishings are a little rough, and in need of upgrades.

This is one of five fundraising events Mont. St. Joseph runs each year. Their next major event is a gala held at the end of November.

Mont. St. Joseph is home to 120 residents with complex and acute special needs.
