MADD Prince Albert puts their message on display

Nov 16, 2015 | 6:43 AM

There are some new signs with an important message that have been put up in Prince Albert.

MADD Prince Albert erected two new signs at two locations around the city. One was placed in front of the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division’s Education Centre on 11 St. E and the other was placed near the Tourism Centre on 2nd Ave W.

The signs feature the MADD logo as well as messages promoting sober driving.

The signs were long in the making. MADD Prince Albert has been working on the them since their branch of the organization was formed last year.

“We’ve never done anything like this before,” President Trina Cockle said. “It just takes time to get all your pieces together.”

First they had to pay for permits from the city to erect the signs, and then get approval from everyone involved.

The lumber was donated by Rona and the Prince Albert Co-op.

“We got some good deals so we’re very happy, it’s just a bigger process than we had originally thought,” Cockle said.

Cockle says there’s a real need for the organization in Prince Albert.

She says the size of their organization alone is enough to demonstrate how important it is to the city.

“In larger cities like Edmonton or Toronto they have four or five people in their membership, and we have like…40. Obviously it’s a need that we’ve met in this city. I think it’s extremely important.”

Having crossed this task off their list, MADD Prince Albert is now focused on project red ribbon. They’ll be working with the Prince Albert Police Services to help with check stops.

They also hope to work with the Prince Albert RCMP as well.

The red ribbon campaign is MADD Canada’s annual awareness campaign, run during the holidays from November to the beginning of January. It’s their longest running awareness program.
