Another group of high school students has crossed the stage.

Thursday morning at the Art Hauser Centre École St. Mary’s class of 2019 received their diplomas to cap off their high school careers. This year the school is graduating 204 students, one of its biggest classes ever.

Besides receiving their diplomas, some graduates were also given awards and scholarships. This year a new award was handed out. The Jacob Leicht Memorial Scholarship in honour of the former St. Mary student who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus collision was handed to Jaelyn Prediger.

“It feels amazing, it’s such an honour to be receiving this award,” she said.

Prediger, who plans to study early years education at the University of Regina in the fall said she recalled seeing Leicht around the school while he was in P.A. playing for the Mintos.

“I remember he would smile at everyone he saw. He was just an amazing person,” she said.

In her speech, valedictorian Chloe Samoila made sure to thank the teachers at the school for not only their work in the classroom, but also being coaches and mentors.

“The work ethic and drive you have instilled in us will bring us far in life,” she said.

After thanking teachers and parents Samoila, who will be going on to the University of Victoria in the fall to study physics and astronomy, touched on how human existence is a miracle.

“We as humans are the result of a million little things going right,” she said.
