Best Divorce Lawyer: Kimberly Stonechild

Kimberly Stonechild is one of the founding members of the partnership at Lavoie Stonechild Law Office and strives to provide transparent and comprehensive legal services to all clients who retain the office.

In 2017, Stonechild was the winner of the paNOW’s Best of the Best divorce lawyer in Prince Albert. For this Prince Albert resident, the decision to practise family law came from necessity.

“My legal practice has primarily been focused on Children’s law, litigation and economic development,” Stonechild said; “Family law is an area where community members requested I build a practice, and I believe that is due to my approachability and my ties to the community.” Growing up in Prince Albert, Kimberly was approached by many people in the area regarding a wide variety of legal matters; many of the queries revolved around family law.

Divorce is a tough and sensitive subject to approach. Stonechild said she strives to build relationships with her clients by being attentive to their needs and focusing on their expectations and ideal outcomes.

“There is no easy way to discuss and approach divorce and all of the issues that need to be addressed that flow from that conversation. I endeavour my best to be compassionate with clients; however, I strive to incorporate realistic legal avenues when we discuss and set their expectations and desired outcomes.” Stonechild said.

Stonechild said she encourages her clients to focus on a logical resolution and to participate in a mediation process, which she says can be empowering for her clients. She also challenges parents, in particular, to think about their relationship with their spouse and what can be set aside to accomplish a goal that is in the best interest of the children of the relationship.

“A lot of people come through the door and have a misapprehension that after divorce, your relationship together ends,” Stonechild said. “It doesn’t. The romantic relationship ends but you still have to work together if your goal is to be strong parents.”

Whether she represents the person filing for divorce, or the person responding to the proceeding, Stonechild said she places the primary emphasis in ensuring her client’s core issues are resolved and that they are emotionally prepared to participate in the legal process.

“The first bit of a divorce is always emotionally straining on everybody,” Stonechild said. “If everybody commits to partake in a respectful process, it works out. It takes a little while and it has growing pains, but it works out.”
