Fifth annual Chris Dunn Memorial Tournament taking over leisure centre this weekend

Oct 24, 2026 | 12:44 PM

Eight of the top 13U AA teams from across Saskatchewan and Alberta are in Prince Albert this weekend for the fifth annual Chris Dunn Memorial Tournament.

The annual tournament is hosted by the Prince Albert Buckeyes in memory of Chris Dunn, a former minor hockey coach within the city who passed away in 2020.

“[Chris] enjoyed the rink, he enjoyed hanging out with friends and family, and that’s kind of what this weekend’s all about,” said tournament coordinator Curtis Bradbury.

This year’s teams include six from within the province, including the Buckeyes, Humboldt Broncos, Northeast Wolfpack, Saskatoon Titans, and the Regina Mustangs and Buffalos. The two teams coming from out of province are the Calgary Buffalo Hawks and the Wainwright Polar Kings. All games will be played at the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre.

The Buckeyes squared off with Wainwright in their first game of the tournament on Friday, where P.A. dropped a narrow 3-2 decision. Bradbury said with what happened at CFB Wainwright last weekend and with one of the four victims being from Prince Albert, the teams honoured the fallen soldiers ahead of the opening puck drop.

“We were able to do a quick moment of silence for the tragedy at CFB Wainwright in Alberta last week, and we paid honour to Shaun Farrell, one of the local military members who lost his life.”

They then paid tribute to Chris Dunn as his family helped kick off the tournament with the ceremonial puck drop, which included his wife Courtney, daughter Mackenzie, and family friend Steve Franklin.

The Buckeyes played this morning and downed the Saskatoon Titans, 8-5. They now look to later in the afternoon at 4 p.m. when they take on the Regina Mustangs in the final game of pool play at Rink 1 of the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre.
