Yohannes Zerai, whose family will call the new house home, had trouble putting his feelings into words after the ribbon was cut.
“I am very happy. I can’t explain, I don’t have words,” he said.
Zerai and his family have been in Canada for five years. He and his wife have eight children and the house provides them more space than they had before.
“This is big. Six bedrooms and comfortable for us. It’s good,” he said.
As part of getting the house, Zerai put in 500 hours of work or “sweat equity” by helping out Habitat’s offices. He added he plans to continue volunteering with the organization.
While they are living in the house, there is still landscaping work to do.
The home for Zerai and his family received support from both the provincial and federal governments. Along with both levels of government, Lake Country Co-op was also part of the project. Co-op chipped in by providing building materials and organizing employees to volunteer building the house.
Tim Keller, CEO of Lake Country Co-op, said he was pleased to provide the support for the community project. After speaking to the crowd assembled he sent well wishes to the family.
“Hope you really enjoy your home,” he said.
