Saskatoon to host profession bull-riding finals

Sep 11, 2012 | 4:34 PM

Saskatoon will host the world’s greatest bulls and cowboys as the Canadian Professional Bull-Riding (PBR) Finals returns in November.

On Tuesday, Jason Davidson, vice-president for PBR Canada announced the PBR National Finals will return to the Credit Union Centre Nov. 16 and 17.

“If any of you have been to our event over the past two years you know what I’m talking about. It’s action-packed bull-riding, rock and roll, man versus beast full contact action,” said Davidson, adding he’s happy to have this event come back to his home city.

Featuring championship riders from Brazil, Australia and Canada, the 2012 finals also features four of the top Canadian bull-riders, including the current point’s leader from Yellow Grass, Sask.

Aaron Roy, the first Canadian to win two national titles, will try and make it a third this year.

Before the PBR Finals in November, riders have the opportunity to gain ground on Roy with competitions in Williston, North Dakota, and Lloydminster at the end of the month.

Although Roy has earned over $750,000 from the PBR Tour, he says he’s hardly the star of the show.

“I just come to do my job,” Roy said. “This November I’ve put myself in a good position to be able to win a third national title and give everyone something to chase.”

Randy Fernets, director of industry development and sports tourism for the City of Saskatoon said high-profile sporting events such as the PBR Finals bring visitors to Saskatoon, in turn helping boost the city’s economy.

“We believe in bringing people to Saskatoon and showing them what we offer in the diversity of sports related events helps grow economies,” Fernets said. “This event will bring significant dollars to the city and coming after the CCMA we expect a lot of people to come out Nov. 16 and 17 to watch.”

This is the third time Saskatoon is hosting the PBR Finals. Tickets for the rodeo go on sale Sept. 14 and tickets for the cowboy cabaret featuring Gord Bamford are also available starting at 10 a.m.
