Harvey nets hat trick, Rudolph ties Morrissey, Raiders win big over Warriors

After four days off and an overall successful three games in three nights stretch in Alberta the weekend prior, the Prince Albert Raiders hosted the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday night for the sixth and final matchup of the season. The Raiders flooded the game with offence, but it wasn’t until the second period where the dam burst and the Raiders rushed to an 11-0 win.

The Raiders did strike early at the 3:26 mark. On a faceoff, Evan Smith touched the puck and tied up his other centreman, Ben Harvey came in from the slot to poke the puck backwards, and Maddix McCagherty came in from the wall to grab it and quickly fire from the slot for his 19th of the season for the first goal of a busy line on the night.

WIth the rest of the goals on the night, there won’t be much more opportunity to talk about Michal Orsulak who was fantastic in his 16 save shutout. The Warriors had a few breakaways on the night, one of which came in the first period where Orsulak made a great save sliding across the net to the left while kicking his right leg out to make the save across his body.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 0 Warriors, 17-5 Raiders

On the first powerplay of the game, Daxon Rudolph found a pen to write his name in the history books. Braeden Cootes started the play from the right point, dropping the puck down low for Aiden Oiring in the corner. Oiring quickly sent the puck back to the slot for Rudolph sneaking in, and he fired it for his 28th of the season, tying Josh Morrissey for the most goals by a Raiders defenceman in a single season.

Just 23 seconds later, and the Raiders scored again to burst the flood gates. At 4:19, Linden Burrett dumped the puck in along the glass and it came to the left wall for Maddix McCagherty. He knocked the puck down and helped keep possession until Ben Harvey took over, and as he settled the puck in the corner Harvey fired and scored his 10th of the season.

The onslaught had begun, and at 6:59 the Raiders scored again when Jonah Sivertson took the puck over on the backcheck at centre and quickly turned around to go on the rush against two defenders. Sivertson slowed up and found a trail Alisher Sarkenov, and Sarkenov moved in on goal and tucked in his 19th of the year on the backhand.

Then at 9:28, the Raiders powerplay went back to work. Braeden Cootes started this play again from the right point with a pass to the middle for Brock Cripps, and he kept it going across the blueline to Daxon Rudolph on the left. Rudolph then found a seam back across the ice to Cootes, and Cootes then found Max Heise open on the left side of the slot for a onetimer and his 27th of the season.

The Raiders went up 5-0 at the 10:47 mark after a great block by Evan Smith in the Raiders own zone, and Matyas Man was able send a pass ahead for Maddix McCagherty at centre. Ben Harvey was streaking in with a burst of speed down the right side, and Harvey got the pass and skated in on a partial breakaway and extended his stick around the goaltender for his 11th of the season and second of the night.

Finally at the 16:09 mark, Ben Harvey and Maddix McCagherty went right back to work. As the Warriors were trying to leave the zone, Harvey quickly picked the pocket of a Warriors defender, and he then found McCagherty going in towards the goal. McCagherty’s backhand found the back of the net for his 20th of the year and second of the night.

After 2: Raiders 7 – 0 Warriors, shots 13-7 Raiders, 30-12 Raiders overall

The onslaught continued on for the Raiders just 2:40 into the final period. Daxon Rudolph gave the puck to Braeden Cootes on the right point, and Cootes fired on goal. Jonah Sivertson found the rebound but his first shot was blocked, but Sivertson found the rebound for his 22nd of the season.

Then at the 5:13 mark, Brayden Dube and Benett Kelly each picked up assists when they helped work the puck to Brock Cripps at the right point with a wide open lane to the goal. Cripps walked in and fired a hard wrist shot off the post in for his sixth of the season.

At the 12:05 mark, Ben Harvey picked up his third assist of the night when he again caused a turnover and gave it to Daxon Rudolph on a 2-on-1. Everyone in the building was convinced Rudolph was about to shoot for the record. Instead, Rudolph sent the puck across to Braeden Cootes who fired a onetimer like he was mad at the net for his 22nd of the year.

In the final minute of the game, the kid got his hat trick. Evan Smith got the puck loose and back to Linden Burrett, and Burrett made a great pass across the ice to Ben Harvey down low for a onetimer. With one shot, Harvey scored his third of the night, 12th of the season, his sixth point of the night, all as hats fell to celebrate his first career hat trick at 19:20.

FINAL: Raiders 11 – 0 Warriors, shots 13-7, Raiders, 41-18 Raiders overall

The night had four stars for the Raiders. First of course was Ben Harvey with his 3G-3A night. That sits as Harvey’s first multipoint night of his WHL career.

The second star of the night was Maddix McaCagherty with 2G-2A on the night. Along with Evan Smith, who had 0G-2A on the night, the line of Harvey, McCagherty, and Harvey combined for 12 points in the game (5G-7A).

Third star of the game belonged to Daxon Rudolph, who was clearly feeling that he would tie Josh Morrissey’s record of 28 goals in a season by a Raiders defenceman. Rudolph also posted 1G-3A along with a game high 10 shots when no other player had more than four. Rudolph has four more games left on the season to take the record for his own.

Finally Michal Orsulak was phenominal on the 16 saves he made during the shutout. It’s his third shutout of the season.

The Raiders take on the Regina Pats Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
