Accused killer of Prince Albert man to have preliminary hearing next spring

The second of two of the accused killers of 41-year-old Norman Wenzel in Prince Albert last year is hoping to have a preliminary hearing in March.

The Crown and defence requested five days in March 2026 to show whether there is enough evidence to proceed to trial on the charge of first-degree murder laid against 22-year-old Rylan Hansen.

Provincial Court Judge Hugh Harradence asked whether five days was too much time, saying he was reluctant to allocate that much of the court’s time to a preliminary hearing when they generally do not take that long.

Harradence did not grant or deny the request for March 11 – 13 and March 16 and 17. Instead, he said a pre-trial conference needs to happen in the next 60 days to make sure that is the time needed.

The Crown plans to call seven witnesses to the stand for the hearing.

Hansen, along with Quentin Gardiner, are charged with first degree murder in connection with Wenzel’s death.

Gardiner also plans to be tried in King’s Bench court but dates have not yet been announced.

On Canada Day 2024, Prince Albert Police were called to Kemp Crescent for a disturbance and found Wenzel suffering from serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he later died.
