Richard Budd manslaughter charge back after new evidence found

Richard Budd, who was first accused of killing Alex Whitehead on New Year’s Eve in Prince Albert in 2022, had the charge stayed March 2023. Investigators have now brought the charges back after finding new evidence.

PAPS said that after the charges were stayed, the Criminal Investigation Division continued digging and found the evidence that allowed them to bring the charges forward again.

Budd will be back in court on February 23, 2024.

Police were called to a home on the 200 Block of 13^th Street East just before 4 a.m. on January 1, 2022 for a weapons call.

They found 20-year-old Alex Whitehead with severe injuries. He was taken to hospital but later died.

Budd’s lawyer told paNOW there were issues with witnesses being able to identify Budd, which was what led the Crown prosecutor to ask to have the charge stayed.
