St. Mary knocks off Carlton in boys volleyball city finals

St. Mary High School will have Prince Albert volleyball bragging rights for the next year after their boys team knocked off rival Carlton High School in the city volleyball finals on Monday night.

St. Mary won in four sets (25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20) in Carlton’s gym.

“We were happy to prevail against a really athletic volleyball team in our match last night, so we were happy to win the game,” said St. Mary Head Coach Rene Quintal. “It’s good confidence for our team knowing we have a game plan and can execute it and at the same time trying to slow down a really athletic volleyball team on their offence and on their serve.”

Quintal said both schools’ volleyball programs have been among the province’s best over the last number of years.

“Anytime that the two schools play each other, it’s two highly skilled teams playing,” said Quintal, who has coached at St. Mary since 2002 and played for the school prior to that as a student. “It’s nice to see the rivalry start when I was in high school 30 years ago and now just seeing how the sport has evolved and how both schools continue to put a lot of pride in boys volleyball in our city.”

Carlton won the game last year so St. Mary was able to return the favour this year. Prior to that, St. Mary won the game in consecutive years dating back to 2015. Every year, one school will host the boys city finals game while the other school hosts the girls city finals game, alternating each year.

Monday’s result has no bearing on provincial qualification. St. Mary will host the northern regional tournament in November with two spots up for grabs for the provincial tournament, which will be hosted by St. Mary.

Quintal added his team will play in one more tournament this weekend in preparation for the playoffs.
