P.A. Whiskey Jacks prevail in season opener over Kradgers

The Prince Albert Whiskey Jacks started the 2023 season off on the right foot by winning their first game of the campaign last night against the Saskatoon Kradgers.

The Jacks were lights out on both ends of the pitch, scoring 38 on the offensive end while holding the Kradgers off the scoreboard on defensive end.

After the statement win to opening the season, coach Darcy Murphy told paNOW he’s impressed with how his team played.

“We played fantastic, typical PA rugby,” he said. “We came out hard and aggressive right off the kickoff. Our first possession, we marched it for about 80 metres and we were relatively error-free. We made all our passes, made all our tackles, we were making good decisions out there and I was truly really impressed with it being the first game of the year. Not a lot of rust.”

“We had some young guys who wanted to get some time in there and they were having fun out there, soaked to the bone,” he continued. “Once the lightning and the rain stopped, we went out and the boys had a blast.”

As the wildfires continue to burn in Northern Saskatchewan and with the smoke making an occasional appearance in Prince Albert, Murphy highlighted that the smoke proved to be an obstacle for the team during training camp but they managed to work around it.

“(The smoke) affected us a little bit,” he explained. “We got to the practice field and we made the decision early on (to take things easy). We didn’t want to be breathing really heavy so we worked on some pod play and three-man unit plays, things like that.”

P.A. is now back in practice mode for the next while until their next contest against the Goats in Saskatoon on Wednesday night. As for their next home game, the Jacks are back in Prince Albert on June 28 against the Saskatoon Badgers.
