Whitehead murder case back to square one after judge releases lone person charged

A man who was accused of being an accessory to murder after the fact is being released from jail, following a judge’s decision there was insufficient evidence to commit him to trial.

Kyle Crain’s preliminary inquiry hearing wrapped up Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

In July, 2022, he was arrested and charged in the death of 23-year-old Drexlyr Whitehead.

On June 20, 2021, at approximately 2 pm, police were called to the 1900 block of 14th Street West for a weapons complaint. On arrival, police located Whitehead in the street, and he was soon after declared deceased.

The evidence discussed during the preliminary inquiry hearing, and the judge’s reasons for making her final decision are protected by a publication ban.

Whitehead’s father passed away in January, but prior to his death had spoken to paNOW and divulged his son was shot in the back.

“And it happened on Father’s Day. That was a real big impact and that’s gonna affect me for the rest of my life,” he explained.

To date, Crain represents the lone person arrested in the case, but Prince Albert police have confirmed they are still investigating.

Multiple members of Crain’s family were present in court for Friday’s hearing.After the preceding, they expressed their relief to paNOW over the result, adding the court process has been equally emotional for them.
