‘I’m glad that justice is finally here for him’: father responds to news of charges laid in son’s death

Bryan Whitehead says he felt the urge to jump through the glass of the prisoner’s box when he laid eyes on the man accused of having a role in his son’s death.

Whitehead and his brother, Gerald, were in court Thursday for Kyle Crain’s first court appearance. The 31-year-old is charged with accessory after the fact in the death of Drexlyr Whitehead in June 2021. Outside the courthouse, Bryan shared with paNOW relief to news of the charge being laid.

“I’m glad that justice is finally here for him. I didn’t think the cops were doing their job at first but its comforting knowing that someone is being held responsible for his murder,” Bryan said.

The Crown was opposed to Crain’s release and he was remanded to Friday morning. While he was being escorted away by a Deputy Sheriff, Bryan, who was sitting less than five feet away in the gallery, was overheard calling him a coward.

“I wanted to jump through that window, grab him, and choke him out. I’m just so angry,” Bryan explained.

On June 20, 2021, at approximately 2 pm, police were called to the 1900 block of 14th Street West for a weapons complaint. On arrival, police located the victim in the street, and he was soon after declared deceased. No other details have been shared but Bryan said his son was shot in the back.

“And it happened on Father’s Day. That was a real big impact and that’s gonna affect me for the rest of my life,” he explained.

In addition to the accessory charge, Crain has a number of other charges before the court; all relating to either property offences, weapons and mischief. His lawyer, Rebecca Crookshanks, revealed prior to this matter coming forward, he had previously been denied bail on his other charges.

Crain’s arrest marks the first in connection to this homicide investigation and police continue to investigate.
