Prince Albert woman receives community-based sentence after high speed incident in Saskatoon

A woman who engaged speeds of 140km/hr, while evading police in what was reported to be a stolen vehicle, has avoided jail time.

Rachelle Sanderson-Krygier appeared by video Thursday for her hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court. In relation to the incident that happened on June 27 in Saskatoon, the 21-year-old entered guilty pleas of failure to stop and possession of a concealed weapon.

She ultimately received a 12-month conditional sentence which means as long as she can abide by the court ordered conditions, she can serve her sentence in the community.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., police spotted a Dodge Nitro that had been reported stolen in Prince Albert. A traffic stop was attempted near 21st Street and Idylwyld Drive North, but Sanderson-Krygier responded by stepping on the gas, and would run at least one red light as she fled from the officers.

As the ground patrol unit disengaged, an air support unit was able to monitor the northbound vehicle. At times the vehicle was observed travelling at speeds between 90 and 140km/hr.

Sanderson-Krygier left the city on Highway 11 traveling toward Warman. Both Warman RCMP and Corman Park Police were notified and successfully deployed several tire deflation devices.

The suspect vehicle was disabled and came to a stop a short distance away. Sanderson-Krygier was then taken into custody without incident.

A search of the vehicle resulted in officers locating bear spray, a small bag of methamphetamine and psilocybin (mushrooms) that had been hidden inside a Kinder surprise egg.

Sanderson-Krygier’s conditions include counseling, and not possessing weapons or drugs. She will also be prohibited from driving for one year.

The Crown noted they had taken into account Sanderson-Krygier’s early guilty plea as well as the fact she had no criminal record. Defense explained she had been struggling after the loss of her father in 2019.
