One Prince Albert athlete hopes to not only strike gold but bring more people to her sport as she competes this month at the Canada Summer Games.

Dori Miller is one of dozens of athletes from Prince Albert travelling with Team Saskatchewan at the Games in Niagara, ON.

For Miller though, she’s the only P.A. product on the provincial Rugby Sevens team. She started playing the sport last summer after a co-worker invited her to try it out. From there she grew to love the sport and eventually make Team Saskatchewan

She acknowledged it’s a very tough sport, but she’s happy to play it.

“There’s so much that goes into it. It’s not really big here in North America. It’s complicated but once you start learning it, you just want to get better and just put the dedication in to learn it,” she said.

Miller hopes that her presence at the Canada Games will inspire more youth in the community to pick up the sport of Rugby. Currently, the city has the Whiskey Jacks Club and several youth players.

“We don’t have a lot of rugby in P.A., it’s mostly in Saskatoon or Regina. I’d love to get more people out in P.A. and get something going.”

She added she’s thrilled to be heading to Niagara with the team and taking in all the sights and sounds of the Canada Summer Games. She’s even more excited to be mentored by her coaches and former national players.

“They’re really big role models for the team. It’s amazing to watch the amount of effort they put in,” she explained.

“It’s a really fun team, fun coaches, and just the environment is going to be so fun with everybody there and hanging out in the athlete’s village.”

The 2022 Canada Summer Games start on August 6 in Niagara. Saskatchewan plays its first game against Team Alberta on August 8.
