MELFORT, Sask. — Canadian National Railway said it has been given 72-hour strike notice by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The union represents about 750 of its signals and communications employees across the country.

The company said the union has given notice of its intention to strike as of 11:00 a.m. eastern time on Saturday.

CN said it remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached without a labour disruption, but if there is a strike it is prepared to ensure a normal level of continued safe operations.

The NDP Oppositions in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are urging the federal government to scrap proposed changes to food labelling on ground beef and pork.

Health Canada plans to require front-of-package nutrition symbols for foods containing 15 per cent or more of the recommended daily intakes of sodium, sugar, and saturated fat.

Saskatchewan’s agriculture critic, Trent Wotherspoon, said the labelling changes will hurt producers by suggesting to consumers that beef and pork are dangerous.

Wotherspoon sent a letter to Ottawa, signed by his counterparts in Alberta and Manitoba, outlining their concerns.

Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) in Portage la Prairie will close its doors at the end of July.

After looking at its business model, president and CEO Leah Olson said they needed to change how they operated, and it was decided to consolidate their physical footprints and change how they collaborate and provide service to clients.

The testing services will cease to be offered out of the Portage location at the end of July. Two positions will be terminated at the end of August.

Most PAMI staff will be co-located with other industry leaders in Winnipeg, Portage and Brandon.

Olson said most of their Manitoba team will remain in province.

PAMI’s head office is in Humboldt, Sask.
