MELFORT, Sask. — Nutrien said it is accelerating the ramp-up of its annual potash production capacity due to the uncertainty of supply from Eastern Europe.

The company said it plans to increase its potash production capacity to 18 million tonnes per year by 2025.

That represents an increase of more than five million tonnes of annual production, or 40 per cent, compared with its production in 2020.

Nutrien said it will hire and train about 350 people and invest in underground mining equipment, mine development, storage, and load out capacity.

It is also evaluating additional brownfield expansion opportunities beyond 18 million tonnes at its Saskatchewan mines.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is reporting more outbreaks of avian influenza in British Columbia and Alberta.

After a succession of outbreaks of avian flu virus in both provinces during April and May, there has been a reprieve of about 10 days at the end of last month.

But the agency now confirms outbreaks in early June in small flocks in three widely separated B.C. farms in Peace River, Sechelt, and Summerland, bringing the total number of infected farms in the province to 15.

Outbreaks on June 2 have also been confirmed in two small flocks in Alberta, pushing the total number of cases there to 31 since a commercial poultry flock was infected on April 6.

The CFIA said all affected flocks in both provinces have been placed under quarantine and producers within a 10-kilometre radius have been notified.

CFIA said farmers should keep their flocks separate from wild birds and away from water sources used by migrating fowl.
