Colour running back into Nipawin

The blah days of pandemic restrictions are behind and the colour is coming back to Nipawin.

Rotary Club member Pat Chernesky is looking forward to June 11 when the first Colour Run since 2019 will happen at the Regional Park.

“The point is to get out and have fun, to get fit, get active. What it is, is a five km walk/run through the Regional Park,” said Chernesky.

Registrants, who have paid their $30 fee, meet at the Fish and Game Hall at the park at 10 am, warm up and start running – or walking – the route.

“What happens is at each kilometre marker there is a group of people tossing coloured corn starch,” she explained.

Each station has an assigned colour and the dyed cornstarch is thrown on the runners as they pass through with the result of a rainbow of colours on the entrant’s shirt.

A popular side fundraiser is to buy a bag of starch at the start point for $2 and make sure that clothing gets a good start on the colour.

“We’re expecting a pretty good turnout this year. A lot of people are very excited about it,” Chernesky said.

The Nipawin Fire Department is on hand every run to make sure participants are hosed down and the colour on their clothing blends nicely.

The money raised is put towards local community causes with this year’s cash going towards improving the East Pleasantview Park near the Ninth Avenue Day Care.

Last year was the Nipawin Rotary Club’s 75th anniversary and normally clubs take on larger projects when they mark a milestone.

Because of COVID it didn’t happen, but they have now decided to adopt the improvements needed to update the park, Chernesky said.

The changes will mean the park will become a fully accessible place for all users.

This is the fifth year the Colour Run has happened in Nipawin.
