MELFORT, Sask. — Canada wants to protect the domestic dairy industry by preventing further imports of British cheese.

The United Kingdom asked Canada to give greater access to Stilton and Wensleydale cheese.

The UK and Canada have started talks on a free-trade deal, including about greater co-operation on renewable energy, technology, and the digital economy.

But Canada said Britain cannot have an extra quota for its cheese, because Canadian dairy farmers might suffer as a result.

Canada produces 1,450 varieties of cheese, including Oka, a semi-soft rind cheese, originally made by Trappist monks in Quebec.

Canada’s Trade Minister Mary Ng said the UK is an important trading partner and a free-trade deal will benefit Canadian and British businesses.

Production at the Bethune, Sask. potash mine will double in the next 20 years.

K+S Group said production capacity is targeted at four million metric tonnes per year, effectively doubling the current production output.

Chief operating officer Holger Riemensperger said the company will conduct a feasibility study to map out future growth and timelines for supporting projects.

He said the company is looking to hire more than 100 additional employees in the areas of operations, trade and supporting roles.

The company employs over 400 people at the Bethune mine and at the Saskatoon, Sask. and Port Moody, B.C. offices.

Farmers Edge Board of Directors has selected its new chief executive officer.

Vibhore Arora was most recently with Amazon Canada. Prior to that, he held senior positions in the information technology and hospitality industries.

Arora will replace company founder and long-time CEO Wade Barnes, effective June 6.

Barnes led Farmers Edge since starting the company in Manitoba in 2005. He will continue to serve on the board and will work on previously announced strategic initiatives.
